The term "Impressionism" refers back to the Latin word "impressio" and means "impression, sense-feeling". The "Impression - soleil levant" by Claude Monet was the true name of the art direction. It was shown in 1874 at the first exhibition of the new art direction in Paris. From the title, an art critic drew the label for the entire style in a mocking manner. Nevertheless, the artists adopted the term for their flow. Impressionism is to be settled between 1860 and 1920.

The Impressionist artists introduced a completely new way of pictorial representation. Parallel to the advent of photography, the meticulous depiction of motifs no longer seemed significant. Instead, the focus was on the mediation of the atmosphere, the subjective impression and the light conditions. With these priorities, Impressionism became the starting point of modern painting.

The works of this style show random picture excerpts with the character of spontaneous snapshots. The motifs mainly consist of natural and urban scenes. Painting was usually done in the open air, whereby the artists used the Alla-prima-painting instead of classical oil painting. At the same time the color palette became brighter and brighter. Colors were placed side by side, which, when viewed from a certain distance, gives a uniform and lively impression.

From France the stylistic spread spread all over Europe. Significant impressionist artists include Édouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin and Camille Pissarro. In Germany, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt are among the most important representatives of Impressionism.
