Born in Moscow in 1866, Wassily Kandinsky, as a thirty-year-old artist, influenced a whole generation of artists in Germany as well as in France with his personal artistic approach. Early on he studied law at the University of Moscow and worked on a variety of papers and a dissertation on social issues. After he had rejected an offer for a professorship at an Estonian university, he moved to Munich and took in 1900 studying with Franz von Stuck at the Art Academy in Munich. Just a few years later, he taught as a teacher at a private art school.

Kandinsky did a lot of mental work on the "intellectual in art", which brought him in 1902 in contact with the 'Berlin Secession', an artists' association around the painters Klimsch, Leistikow , Liebermann , Slevogt , Corinth , Beckmann, Barlach and Feininger. In this epoch, the art world resembled a period that was influenced by painting to nature themes, but also marked by fractures to abstraction, so that divergences and differences over what was worthy of exhibition did not fail to materialize. So he founded and exhibited together with the group 'Die Brücke' in Dresden in 1906, followed in 1907 in Munich by the 'Neue Künstlervereinigung', from which - together with Franz Marc as Wegbereiter and at the top - the group of the 'Blaue Reiter' emerged. Travels to Paris and Italy brought Kandinsky into touch with the stylistic aspirations of Cubism and Fauvism, and contributed to his thinking becoming increasingly concerned with the substantial question of modern art, namely the function of the image in a world plundered by materialism ,

All conventional pictorial means did not seem immaterial enough to neutralize the materiality of reality. For Kandinsky, only music could overcome this materiality without having to lean on the concrete. His images became increasingly non-objective, and so he created an independent new focus on differentiated play of colors and rhythmic forms. Exhibitions of his works in Munich, Zurich, the USA and in Moscow document the troubled but always agile and new-oriented artist, also in search of his own invention. Following stops in Moscow and Berlin, he moved to Weimar in 1922 and, at the invitation of Walter Gropius, became a teacher at the local Bauhaus. He meets other important artists such as Lyonel Feininger and, together with Paul Klee and the Russian painter Jawlensky , he founds the artist group 'Die Blaue Vier'.

When the Bauhaus closes in 1933, Kandinsky moves to Paris. There he meets other important artists such as Robert Delaunay , Fernand Léger, Joan Miro, Piet Mondrian and Hans Arp. In 1937, the National Socialists defamed his works. Over 57 pictures are confiscated and removed from German museums. © Meisterdrucke
