The French poet Guillaume Apollinaire called his compatriot Robert Delaunay an "Orphic cubist" in 1912 after seeing the bright colors of his mostly circular images. Warm and cold colors are contrasted and evoke the impression of movement in the eye of the beholder.

"Art is rhythmic," Delaunay explained. "Without visual sensibility, there is no light, no movement."

The trained stage designer turned to painting as an autodidact and further developed Seurat's pointillism. In his early works, square forms replace the points that made up his pictures. He is thus regarded as a cofounder of cubism. With this technique Delaunay first painted landscapes and cityscapes. Particularly well-known works of this phase are the "windows", which show views of the Eiffel Tower.

Robert Delaunay was at that time already a member of the Blue Rider in Munich, at whose first exhibition also one of his Eiffel Tower pictures was shown. Delaunay was able to sell three out of four of the pictures shown. Instead of continuing the successful concept, he turned to more abstract paintings, which deliberately had no objective templates. Now the series "Rythmes" was born. Delaunay's Parisian apartment became the center of the French art scene. With his influential theoretical writings such as "About the Light" Delaunay exerted a strong influence on the artists Franz Marc, August Macke and Paul Klee across the Franco-German border. During the First World War Robert Delaunay had to flee together with his wife Sonia to Spain and worked there temporarily as a stage designer. After the war he returned to Paris. He died in 1941 in Montpellier from a cancer. © Meisterdrucke
