Although "Starry Night" is one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous paintings, few people are likely to know that the picture was not created in the open air, but in the mental hospital of Saint-Rémy. It is van Gogh's view from his room in the very same institution which on May 8, 1889, scarcely more than a year before his suicide, that he was plagued by mental disorders that one can posthumously assume are depressions and posthumous delusional episodes acted, resorted to. The painting lets the viewer see the world through the eyes of perhaps the greatest artist in history in one of its darkest hours. But even this darkness is broken by the light of the stars and the moon, which thus becomes the symbol of the last ray of hope of a desperate soul.
