As the name suggests, Post-Impressionism followed Impressionism in time and is roughly limited to the period between 1880 and 1905. However, the term was first used a few years later, by the English art critic Roger Fry. He used it at one of his exhibitions on the subject. Sometimes, however, we still speak of Late Impressionism or Post-Impressionism. The styles Synthetism, Cloisonism as well as Pointillism also belong to Post-Impressionism.
The artists of this style of painting largely followed the principles and views of Impressionism, which emphasized spontaneity, modernism, and virtuosity, but expanded it with new ideas of order and statement of the paintings. The works were intended to be aesthetic and to convey the subjective feelings that moved the artists to make their paintings. The viewer was to be encouraged to experience the paintings with his senses, and the importance of reproducing the painted in its natural form receded into the background for this purpose.
A great influence on the emergence and development of Post-Impressionism had the so-called "School of Pont-Aven", an artists' colony to which one of the most famous representatives of Post-Impressionism, Paul Gauguin, belonged. By far the most famous representative, however, is Vincent Van Gogh, whose works such as the "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" achieve record prices.
