The Frenchman Henri Eugene Augustine Le Sidaner was a famous artist of the 19th century. His individual use of light and his particular painterly approach to nature were strongly influenced by Impressionist artists. Often, therefore, he is referred to in art literature as "the last impressionist". The most famous works of Le Sidan are paintings that deal with the light effects at dusk or fog. Alfred Sisley, the owner of Soir Gallery, was a great admirer of this work and contributed a great deal to the success of his protégé Le Sidaner by exhibiting these pictures in The Soir.

Soon after his birth in 1862 in Port Louis, Mauritius, the family Le Sidaner returned to their native France. As an 18-year-old, Le Sidaner passed the entrance exam of the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in the cultural city of Paris. Being able to study art here was a sure guarantee of a future good career. The young man was taught at the influential Academy among others by the painter Alexandre Cabanel. Great examples of the talented student were the then very popular and progressive impressionists. After graduating, Le Sidaner moved to the Normandy coast and lived and worked for a long time in the idyllic little town of Etaples. In 1891 he participated with his paintings for the first time in an exhibition at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français. It was his breakthrough in the French art scene. A little later, Le Sidaner's work was awarded a bronze medal at the World's Fair, which also took place in Paris. In the same year he moved after a short stay in Beauvais to Gerberoy sur l'Oise. There he met devotees of symbolism. After moving, Le Sidaner mainly painted garden scenes, still lifes and views of old houses. His motifs were usually shrouded in twilight, which gave them a special charm.

In 1905 the Frenchman had a particularly productive year. He had traveled to Venice to find new inspiration and focus on his work as a painter. These paintings were exhibited in London and Paris and both the public and the strict art critics responded positively. Le Sidaner was a prolific, respected and successful painter until the end of his life. He died in 1939 at the age of 77 years in Versailles. © Meisterdrucke
