Caspar David Friedrich is considered one of the leading painters of German Romanticism. He grew up as the sixth of ten children in Greifswald. His education was shaped by his father's strictly Lutheran faith. Even at a young age Friedrich suffered various strokes of fate. His mother died when he was 7 years old. Shortly thereafter, one of his sisters died. At the age of 13, he witnessed his brother Christoffer, one year younger, drown in the lake. Christoffer was killed trying to save Caspar David himself. This experience shaped Friedrich strongly and should probably have been one of the reasons for his later depression and the failed suicide attempt.

Friedrich received his first drawing lessons in 1790 as a private pupil of the artist Johann Gottfried Quistrop, who gladly took excursions with his pupils to the Vorpommern landscape. He encouraged Frederick to draw freely from nature. Through his teacher Quistrop Friedrich also made the acquaintance of the theologian Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten, who saw nature as the revelation of God. After four years, Friedrich went to study at the Copenhagen Academy. There he was a student of Christian August Lorentzen and Jens Juel . After completing his studies Friedrich settled in Dresden in 1798. Although he tried many different methods, such as etchings and experimental prints, he preferred to draw and draw with ink, watercolor or sepia. Later he also painted oil paintings more often. Frequent motives of his work were landscape scenes that were inspired by his frequent trips to the Baltic Sea, Rügen or the Harz. He gained notoriety in 1805, when he won the coveted Weimar Kunstfreunde Prize, at the urging of Goethe. Special recognition is given to his work "Tetschener Altar" (1807), which is regarded as the beginning of his mature oil technique.

Frederick's reputation steadily deteriorated over the last fifteen years of his life. When the ideals of early Romanticism went out of fashion. He saw his contemporaries as an eccentric and melancholy person. His style was outdated. Gradually, his patrons left him and Frederick retreated farther and farther back. Around 1835 he suffered the first stroke, which had the first paralysis. Despite a stay at the spa, Friedrich hardly recovered and it was difficult for him to paint. He gave up the oil painting almost completely and devoted himself to watercolors and sepia drawings. His last oil painting was "Seashore by Moonlight". The works of that time hardly showed any more scenic scenes, but often contained symbols of death and dwindling life, such as "coffin at the grave". Frederick was able to paint less and sell even less, leaving him and his family in poverty in the end. © Meisterdrucke
