Howard Pyle war ein vielseitiger Künstler. Der am 5. März 1853 in Washington geborene Spross einer Quäker-Familie erlangte nicht nur als bildender Künstler Weltruhm, sondern machte sich auch als Schriftsteller einen Namen.
Schon in frühester Jugend schrieb er Gedichte und Geschichten, die er auch illustrierte. Im Jahr 1983 vollendete er sein Buch "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire)", das ihn international bekannt machte und zu einem Klassiker avancierte. Diese für Kinder adaptierte Version der berühmten englischen Volkssage um den die tyrannische Obrigkeit bekämpfenden Bogenschützen wurde in Wort und Bild stilgebend für viele weitere Bearbeitungen des altehrwürdigen Stoffes – sei es in der Literatur, der Malerei oder dem Film.
Auf seine Zeichnungen geht auch der bis heute allseits verinnerlichte Look von Piraten und Zigeunern zurück. Ohne Howard Pyles Arbeiten hätten Kinohelden von Errol Flynn bis Johnny Depp wohl nie ihren flamboyanten Style erhalten. Auch mit seinen Gemälden hinterließ Howard Pyle Eindruck. Als jemand, der sich für für amerikanische Geschichte interessierte, widmete er sich als Maler oft eben jenen Motiven – etwa den großen Schlachten. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen "The Battle of Nashville" (1906/07) und "The Battle of Bunker Hill" (1897). Fernerhin gründete er 1900 die Brandywine-Kunstschule, die viele bedeutende Künstler hervorbrachte.
Am 9. November 1911 starb Howard Pyle in Florenz an den Folgen einer Niereninfektion.
