The work of Alexej Jawlensky (1864-1941) testifies the way to abstraction like no other modern oeuvre.

The Russian-German painter Jawlensky first counts to the well-known group "The Blue Rider". Franz Marc , Wassily Kandinsky , Gabriele Münter, Paul Klee and August Macke were represented in this loose association of avant-garde expressive artists. Typical of this phase Jawlensky is the woman portrait "Princess Turandot". It is characterized by an almost accentuated intense color, combined with a reduced formal idiom, which already suggests the artist's further artistic path.

In the phase in which "Princess Turandot" was born, Jawlensky painted in the style of the Expressionists. An example of this is the painting "Murnauer Landschaft" from 1907.

But that should change. In 1917, the picture "Mystic head Sphinx" was created. The expressionist features are still clearly recognizable, the formal language, however, already appears reduced to the essence of a face. In 1926 Jawlensky paints the picture "Abstract Head Sun-Color-Life". Still the picture shows a human head, still intensive colors characterize the picture impression. The work "Abstract head - winter mood" from the year 1932 reduces again the colourfulness, also the characteristics of the human face are further minimized to the essentials. In the ever-new and ever more simplified representations of the human face, Jawlensky develops his very own formal language, which only belongs to him. © Meisterdrucke
