Gustave Caillebotte was the oldest of three sons of Martial Caillebotte and his third wife Céleste Daufresne. The family belonged to the Parisian upper class and was very wealthy. Martial Caillebotte was the heir to a textile and laundry business that supplied the French military. He was also a judge at the commercial court. Because of their prosperity, in addition to their city palace in Paris, they could afford an extensive country house in a small town outside of Paris. From the age of 12 Gustave Caillebotte spent many summers there. He probably started drawing around this time, inspired by the environment. Despite his early interest in art, he received a rather classical education, studied law and received an official license to work as a lawyer. Shortly after graduation, the Franco-Prussian War broke out and Caillebotte was called up. After nine months, he was discharged from service and returned to Paris.

Caillebotte decided to seriously deal with painting. He learned the basics in Léon Bonnat's studio to prepare for the entrance exam at the École des Beaux-Arts. In the end he was admitted to the academy, but hardly attended any courses. Instead, he met some artists who were not affiliated with the academy and made friends with them. These included Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Guiseppe de Nittis. He was present at the first Impressionist exhibition, but did not exhibit his work there until years later. His father died in the same year, so Caillebotte inherited a considerable fortune at the age of 25. He became one of the greatest sponsors of the Impressionists and acquired many works from Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cézanne and others. For Monet, he is even said to have paid the rent for his studio.

Caillebotte did great service to the Impressionists even after his death. In his will, he stated that his large art collection should go to the French government after his death. At his request, these works were to be exhibited in the Luxembourg Palace and later in the Louvre. Caillebotte apparently sensed during her lifetime that the Impressionists' work would otherwise be forgotten in the country's most remote museums. The dispute over this agreement continued after his death and was finally enforced a few years later by his representatives Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his brother Martial. Although Gustave Caillebotte was a talented artist himself, he received recognition for his work long after his death. This was mainly because he never felt the financial pressure to sell his paintings because of his wealth. Much of his work remained in the family for a long time and was hidden from the public eye. The peculiarity of his work was the combination of impressionism and realism. © Meisterdrucke
