John William Waterhouse was born in Rome in 1859. His father William Waterhouse was a painter his stepmother Jane the daughter of British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval. His father educated John William and later he became a student of the English Royal Academy.
Waterhouse developed a very own style of painting, which led him away from the Victorian painters to a mixture of classicism, romanticism, fantasy and realism and which was very interesting. His genre paintings and landscapes were very popular, Waterhouse had artistic but also commercial success.
In 1883 the painter married Esther Kenworthy, the daughter of a painting school teacher, and in 1917 he died of cancer in London at the age of 68. Well-known works by William Waterhouse are "The Lady of Shalott", "Meerjungfrau" and "Hylas und die Nymphen".
