The French painter Georges Valmier discovered his artistic talent at an early age. His works show the influences of the styles of his time. Valmier discovered Cubism for himself. He was a talented artist who did not only concentrate on painting. He designed stage sets and costumes for theatre and ballet and developed design concepts for carpets and other objects. Besides, he was also interested in music. He regularly gave public performances of works by the composers Debussy, Ravel or Fauré.

In 1905 the Frenchman enrolled at the Académie Humbert, two years later he began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. During his studies and in the following years he mainly created portraits, still lifes and landscapes in the style of cubism. He found inspiration at the Salon d'Automne, where Georges Braque and Paul Cézanne exhibited his first early Cubist works. The current of Cubism changed art greatly at that time. Cubism means translated as cubes. Typical for Cubist paintings are the seemingly abstract division of the motif into geometric forms and the geometric style as the basis for the painting's structure. Valmier's paintings show an interesting prismatic dissection of the picture motif. In 1913 he exhibited his works for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants.

The First World War also influenced the life of the French artist. He was drafted. He recorded the impressions from this difficult time in his collected sketches, which became known as war notes or in the original "Carnets de guerre". Afterwards he returned to Paris. He met Léonce Rosenberg, a merchant who had great enthusiasm for Valmier's art. Rosenberg took the artist under contract. In 1921 Rosenberg organized a solo exhibition at which Valmier presented many of his works. This was followed by regular publications in the Bulletin de L'Effort moderne. In the years that followed, Valmier's style changed a little. Extensive compositional studies of individual motifs with gouaches and collages, which differed only in small details such as the colouring, made up a large part of his artistic work at this time. In this way he carefully approached his final motif. During this experimental period, his works were almost abstract. From 1922 onwards, his works again showed clear characteristics of Cubism. Harmonious geometric compositions with strong colours were created. He made his works accessible to an interested public at numerous exhibitions worldwide. Around 1928 his style changed once again. The straight and clear lines gave way; instead, his works showed curved lines that seemed almost organic. Around 1930 Georges Valmier completely changed to abstract painting. His interest in the style was already evident in his earlier works. In 1908 the artist married Jeanne Bliss Pessina, with whom he had a daughter. Unfortunately, the artist died in 1937 of an illness at the age of only 52 years. © Meisterdrucke
