Christianity: Painting in the service of faith

Rogier van der Weyden painted his Descent from the Cross for the crossbowmen's guild of Leuven, and small crossbows in its painted tracery recall the patrons; the panel was copied many times over as early as the fifteenth century.

Christianity

Pope Gregory the Great defended the images in the churches when a bishop of Marseille had them destroyed for fear of idolatry: whoever cannot read should see on the walls what stands in the books. With that the task of painting was outlined. It held for centuries, as long as most congregations remained dependent on the image as narrative.

Fixed signs made the pictures legible. A key turns a bearded man into the apostle Peter, a broken wheel points to the martyr Catherine, without any need for an inscription. Such marks travelled through every genre, from the wall painting to the small panel for the home. Besides the Bible, the subjects came above all from the Legenda aurea, a collection of saints' legends compiled around 1264 in the Dominican order, which was copied and translated throughout Europe.

In Bruges Hans Memling gathered the story of Saint Ursula into a gilded shrine that has the form of a small chapel and was consecrated in the Hospital of Saint John in 1489. Its pictorial fields follow the pilgrimage from Cologne by way of Basel to Rome and back again, before the martyrdom outside the walls of Cologne closes the cycle.
