The great role model of Valentin-de-Boulogne, who was born in France, was Caravaggio. The revolutionary against the doctrine of the Renaissance attracted the son of a painter to Rome to form his artistic work in the style of the works of Caravaggio and later also Manfredi. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the young artist, who had just passed the age of twenty, was drawn to the Italian centre of art.
Life in the taverns attracted Valentin. He found his favourite motives with the jugglers, dancers and fortune tellers. From his pictures should speak the cheerfulness and the music, but also the drinking and cheating while playing. He painted his pictures with a direct and lively style. "The lute player" is a typical motif of genre painting. Around 1628 Boulogne created "Les quatre âge des l'homme". An allegory of the four stages of a man's life. Depicted are a child, a youth, an adult and an old man in a melancholic mood.
Real life in Rome contradicted the conviviality in Boulogne's pictures, he withdrew and devoted himself increasingly to religious motifs. He remained true to his colour scheme. The late work "The Last Supper" reminds of his early works. However, it lacks the liveliness and movement in the motif. Towards the end of his life Valentin worked as a commissioned painter for the church. His most important work is the altar painting of the completed St. Peter's Cathedral.
