El Greco was a Greek painter who coined the Spanish Mannerism. He was born in 1541 as Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Greece. In Crete, he learns the craft of icon painting. His pictures are influenced by religious motives. One of his most famous works is the funeral of the Count of Orgaz, which originated in his later home Spain. In the picture you can see a deceased whose soul ascends to heaven to face the world judge. It was made from 1586 to 1588. He still impresses today with his intense colors, which he used in his paintings.

His work as a painter brought him from his home island of Crete, via Venice and Rome to Spain. In Venice, he becomes a pupil of Titian and is deeply impressed by his works of art. The Grand Master of the Italian High Renaissance teaches the young Greek. This is where his art style changes. The straightforward, Byzantine painter turns to Venetian painting, which is known for its rich colors and spatial depth. His paintings are becoming more colorful. He uses lemon yellow and rich pinks in his pictures. He then travels to Rome. Rome was home to some of Europe's most important artists such as Michelangelo , Raphael or Pontormo . Intimidated by the talent of the artists and a bad order situation, he is drawn to Spain. He first lands in Madrid and applies for a job at the king's castle. This was still under construction and El Greco hoped to be involved. However, the king refused his application.

He travels on through the country. By accident, it takes him to the Spanish royal and episcopal city of Toledo. The city is to become his new home. Here he feels at home and welcome. He quickly makes a name for himself and finds a connection with his new acquaintances, who later become his best friends. The locals call the gifted artist "El Greco". It will be his nickname, which has been handed down to this day. El Greco's greatest works of art, still world-famous, date back to his new home. He paints, for example, the Laocoon painting. This artwork embodies El Greco's very personal story. Here he connects his native Greece with his new home Toledo in a creative way, which thrills the people very much. In the years that followed, his paintings decisively influenced Spanish Mannerism. He is inspired by works by the Spanish mystics San Juan de la Cruz and Teresa of Ávila and always finds new ideas. In old age, classic, rather calm pictures are created. El Greco died in Toledo in 1614. He was 73 years old. © Meisterdrucke
