The medieval alleys of Siena are filled with the echo of the resounding footsteps of a remarkable painter whose unmistakable artistry left its mark on the city. This man was Taddeo di Bartolo, an outstanding fresco painter whose life and work have left a deep mark on Siena's art scene. Born around 1362 or 1363, Taddeo was the eldest son of the barber Bartolo di Maestro Mino and his wife Francesca di Cino. His early years were marked by art, which was the beating heart of his hometown of Siena. Taddeo was blessed with the artistic ability that was fully displayed during the decades of his activity. At the age of 23, he received the prestigious commission to color 78 figures in the choir of Siena Cathedral. His name became more and more widespread over the years, eventually taking him to the distant cities of Genoa, Perugia and Pisa. Each new order, whether an altarpiece for the church of St. Luke in Genoa or a designated Madonna with angels and saints for San Paolo in Pisa, was carefully reproduced in our art prints. Each art print is a living witness to the remarkable craftsmanship and artistic commitment of Taddeo di Bartolo.
While embarking on his travels, Taddeo married Simona del Monte and settled for a time in San Gimignano. Here he created two paintings for the Palazzo Comunale: a Madonna with Saints and an image of Saint Geminianus. He also left an impressive fresco of Heaven and Hell in the collegiate church. But Taddeo's reputation as an artist was only one facet of his impressive life. He was also a respected member of the community and served several times as an assessor on the Siena High Council. His commitment to his hometown continued until his death in 1422, when he died at the age of 59. Despite the fleeting and ephemeral nature of his art, Taddeo di Bartolo's work has remained alive through our art prints.
