Genre painting

Market stalls, taverns, household chores; the cast of these pictures remains nameless, and precisely that distinguishes genre painting from portraiture. It found its classic form in the Dutch seventeenth century, when the interior with quiet figures became a genre in its own right. Johannes Vermeer condensed letter-readers and music-makers into pictures of great stillness, in which incidental objects can often be read on two levels. The moral genre scene of the period praised domestic industry and mocked vice in the tavern, preferably in one and the same scene.

A second flowering came with the middle-class public of the nineteenth century, which recognised its own life in such scenes. Whether Paris, Tyrol or the English countryside, every region found its chroniclers: Louis Leopold Boilly and Eugene Galien-Laloue for Parisian street life, Franz von Defregger for the Tyrolean parlour, Helen Allingham for the English cottage. Because these pictures incidentally record the dress, household goods and street scenes of their day, they are now a rich source for cultural history. Pure reportage they never were, though; framing and arrangement always followed the story, often a moral point as well.
