At the center of the artful Baroque dance of late 17th-century Dutch painting, stands the virtuoso Godefridus Schalcken (*1643 in Made near Breda; † November 16, 1706 in The Hague). In the tradition of the finest Leiden fine painting, he wove illusionistic portraits, genre paintings, and histories from biblical and mythological threads interwoven with still lifes and landscapes. His unmistakable artistic fingerprint: the depiction of special light effects, especially candlelight. Son of a Protestant pastor's family from Dordrecht, Schalcken received his first artistic education from Rembrandt student Samuel van Hoogstraten. He later moved to Gerrit Dous workshop in Leiden, where his particular affinity for fine painting was brought to perfection. After his return to Dordrecht, he began his career as an independent artist. Not only genre paintings found their way onto his canvases, but also lucrative portrait paintings. Impressive is the 1679 portrait pair of him and his wife Françoisia van Diemen, whom he depicts in full beauty and virtue. The portrait captures Schalcken as a self-confident gentleman who looks out at the viewer with dignity. This art print masterpiece is a living testament to how Schalcken used his virtuoso technique to create immortality.
With the ability to effectively stage candlelight, Schalcken made a name for himself and solidified his place in art history. He followed in many important footsteps, including those of Cosimo III de'Medici and King Christian V, and created works that won acclaim at the courts of Florence and Copenhagen. An extensive and varied œuvre attests to Schalcken's ambitions as an all-round artist and his willingness to adapt to the wishes of his clientele. With his illusion painting, Schalcken succeeded in creating haptic qualities that, in combination with sensuous female actors, exude an irresistible persuasive power in intimate moments. The complexity of his depictions is illustrated, among others, by "Lady in Front of the Mirror," shown at the evening toilet, a powerful example of his artistic wit and ability to transform everyday scenes into art.
