In the city of Leiden, famous for its university and rich historical heritage, an extraordinary talent was born on April 7, 1613. Gerard Dou, who was known by various names such as Gerard Douw or Gerrit Dou, would soon rise to become one of the leading lights of Dutch Baroque painting. Dou, who became known for his deep attention to detail and exquisite painting techniques, went down in history as the founder of Leiden fine painting - a style that was cultivated well into the 18th century.
Dou was a master craftsman whose artistic journey found its beginning in apprenticeship with his father Douwe Jansz, a stained glass artist, and then at Bartholomeus Willemsz. Dolendo. He also spent a few years with the glass painter Pieter Clouwenhorn before finally completing his training in the workshop of the great Rembrandt. His talent flourished under the guidance of Rembrandt, and the master's presence had a profound influence on Dou's style and understanding of art. Beginning in 1632, Dou began to work independently in Leiden and became a member of the prestigious Leiden Guild of St. Luke in 1648. Dou's works pay homage to the subtle beauty of everyday life. His paintings, often small-scale, tell stories of daily life embedded in dark, narrow spaces that express a wealth of emotion and nuance despite their limitations. He left behind some 200 works, with his major works now in museums of world renown, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre in Paris, and the National Gallery in London.
