Julien Dupre

    March 18, 1851   -   April 16, 1910
Genre painting , Realism   •   Wikipedia: Julien Dupre

Deeply rooted in the vibrant streets of Paris, the 19th century saw the unfolding life and artistic career of a remarkable French genre painter: Julien Dupré. Born on March 18, 1851, Dupré's painterly vision and talent for realism lent an air of romance and poetry to everyday peasant scenes. Although he left us on April 16, 1910, his legacy lives on in his artwork and the fine art prints we have carefully reproduced. Originally intended as the successor to the family jewelry business, Dupré's life took a completely different turn after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. With the family business closed, he found himself taking evening classes at the prestigious École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. His craftsmanship was honed under the watchful eye of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. His life took another turn when he traveled to Picardy and became a pupil of his stepfather Desire Francois Laugee, whose daughter he later married.

Dupré's palette drew its inspiration from rural life, especially Normandy and Brittany. In his hands, the everyday life of peasants became a poetic work of art reminiscent of the masterpieces of Jean Francois Millet and Jules Breton. Dupré possessed a special talent for painting animals, which made him one of the best of his time. His extraordinary ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary was recognized in numerous Paris salons and at the 1889 Paris World's Fair, where he received a gold medal. To crown his artistic achievements, he was inducted into the prestigious Legion of Honor in 1892. Today, his works can be found not only in France, but also in numerous American museums. In our collection, we offer high-quality art prints of Dupré's stunning works that will add a touch of rural romance and historical significance to any room. We are honored to carry on the legacy of this remarkable artist through the precision and quality of our art prints.
