James Jnr Hardy

    November 14, 1832   -   July 24, 1889
Genre painting   •   Wikipedia: James Jnr Hardy

James Hardy Junior, born November 14, 1832, distinguished himself as a British artist whose devotion to depicting sporting dogs and Scottish sporting culture brought vivid and moving images to canvas. In addition to these subjects, his artistic devotion was also to depicting rural genre scenes and cozy cottage interiors.

Hardy, the eldest of ten children of artist James Hardy Senior and his wife Elizabeth, was born in Brighton, Sussex, into a family strongly associated with art. The musical vocation of his father, who served as principal trumpeter in King George IV's private band before turning to painting, as well as the artistic abilities of his siblings and cousins, provided a vibrant backdrop for his own artistic development. The Hardy family moved several times, and in each new home - from Lewes to Chichester to Bath - young James found inspiration for his artistic endeavors. In fact, he received encouraging feedback on his first exhibitions, which consisted of studies of wild birds and were shown at the Bath Graphic Society in 1852.

In 1854, Hardy ventured into the world of sporting art and began painting pictures of sporting dogs, which he exhibited at the Society of British Artists. His works, particularly his depiction of a pointer's head, were praised for their precision, artistry, and striking character. Despite his growing recognition as an artist of sports pictures, Hardy also devoted himself to painting genre scenes in cottage interiors in the 1850s and 1860s.

Although Hardy showed promise, he apparently found it difficult to make a living as an artist in Bath. In 1859, he left his parents' home and moved to Bristol. The following year he married Laura Amelia May and moved to the Bedford Villa on Terrell Street in Bristol. Today, Hardy's rich legacy is kept alive through exquisitely reproduced art prints of his works. In each detailed art print of his painting of sporting dogs or rural genre scenes, his artistic spirit lives on, allowing today's art lovers to connect with a bygone era and share James Hardy Junior's fascination and passion for his art.
