Nikolai Dmitrievich Kuznetsov

    December 02, 1850   -   March 02, 1929
Portrait painting , Genre painting   •   Wikipedia: Nikolai Dmitrievich Kuznetsov

In the turmoil of the cultural boom of the Russian Empire of the 19th century Nikolai Dmitrievich Kuznetsov unfolded his talent. Born on December 2, 1850 in Stepanovka, Kherson Governorate, Kuznetsov found his way to art and advanced to become a recognized portrait and genre painter. Moreover, he took a professorship at the Russian Academy of Arts. His work reflects the vibrant cultural life of his era and remains of great importance in the world of art prints to this day.

Kuznetsov, the son of a wealthy landowner, caught the attention of his teachers while still at school in Odessa with his distinct artistic talent. It was at the local drawing school that he received the decisive impetus for his artistic career. Between 1876 and 1880, he deepened his skills at the Imperial Russian Academy of Arts, where he became a student of Pavel Chistyakov. Despite his often extracurricular activities painting the rural scenes of his family land, he was classified as a promising student. In a departure from his family's wishes, he married a working-class woman. With the completion of his studies, Kuznetsov entered a period of intense artistic activity. He exhibited in Russia and Ukraine and received numerous painting commissions. Among the personalities he portrayed were such greats as Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Ilya Ilyich Metschnikov. His country estate, to which he retired after an accident in 1889, became a meeting place for creative society, which included Fyodor Shalyapin. Kuznetsov moved his studio to Odessa, became a professor at the Imperialist Academy and a member of the Peredvishniki.

The upheavals of the Russian Civil War eventually caused Kuznetsov and his family to emigrate to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He lived in Sarajevo until his death in 1929. His cultural legacy, including that of his daughter, the opera singer Maria Nikolayevna Kuznetsova-Benois, and his own, of artistic expression in his portraits and genre scenes, remains. In our activity as a manufacturer of art prints, we strive to preserve the artistic expression and cultural heritage of Kuznetsov. Each art print from his oeuvre is a tribute to his unique style and an appreciation of his contributions to the art world.
