Painting Frames "Aline" |
| • Serie: Kopar • Width: 26mm • Height: 24mm |
| The Aline is one of those frames where we like to pause for a moment before inserting the sheet. Three ornamental bands are arranged in succession across a width of just 26 millimetres: on the outside, a palmette frieze; below that, a scale or fish-bladder pattern; and on the very inside, directly at the fold, a narrow golden groove with a delicate laurel branch. This gradation from the dark outer edge to the light inner edge is an age-old technique from Italian and South German frame-making: the eye travels inwards across the black-brown and is drawn into the picture by the gold, rather than lingering at the edge. The relief structure has a patina; the darkness lies in the recesses, whilst a copper-brown hue shimmers through on the raised ridges. In oblique light, this creates a very lively effect; under flat lighting, the frame appears almost uniformly dark. The cross-section reveals a neatly deep rebate with a distinct support edge, plus a height of 24 millimetres. This provides support for the sheet and reliably protects the delicate edge of the artwork. We are happy to recommend it for still lifes with a dark background or for etchings and old copperplate engravings. It looks at its best when the subject itself features warm, muted tones. |
