| This six-centimetre-wide gold frame, made of solid wood, features a bold, neatly crafted concave moulding. From the narrow inner web, the surface rises outwards in a broad, concave curve, ending in a delicately rounded edge. This shape gently guides the eye towards the centre of the picture, whilst at the same time possessing sufficient substance to confidently accommodate even larger formats. The mitre joints are neatly fitted, with a fine, unobtrusive joint line. Its golden surface displays a longitudinal grain and small dark speckles. Reddish-brown accents are particularly evident in the deeper and outer areas. As a result, the gold does not appear flat, but shifts in the light between a warm lustre and subdued shadows. This works particularly well in conjunction with the moulding. Such curved profiles are in the tradition of 18th- and 19th-century European picture frames. They were often used to visually frame portraits and landscape paintings and to create a sense of distance from the wall. We particularly recommend this frame for atmospheric landscapes or portraits featuring warm brown, red and ochre tones. It looks at its best in our collection when the subject possesses a certain depth and painterly tranquillity. |
