| This four-centimetre-wide gold frame reminds us of those quiet cornice workshops in Milan, where sample mouldings line the walls side by side and the light reveals each surface in a different way. Its warm antique gold finish is not mirror-smooth, but is interspersed with fine dark longitudinal marks and small irregularities. As a result, it glows softly depending on the angle of view and recedes into the shadows. The profile is made of solid wood. It is broad and understated in design, with an almost flat, slightly curved visible surface and a slight step at the inner edge. This subtle gradation draws the eye to the subject without creating a harsh boundary. The shape is vaguely reminiscent of Italian ‘cassetta’ frames, whose flat frieze zones have, since the Renaissance, clearly enclosed paintings whilst also providing space for coloured or gilded surfaces. Here, this tradition has been significantly simplified, giving the frame a pleasantly light appearance. We particularly recommend this frame for atmospheric landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich or finely nuanced portraits. It looks at its best with pictures featuring warm earth tones, muted blues or individual areas of bright light. We consider it a lovely choice when gold is intended to complement rather than dominate. |
