Moon and night

270 Discovered works of art
Myths entwine around her the moon. He is already pictured in ancient cave paintings. He was always considered mysterious and magical, especially in a total lunar eclipse, when the moon turned red and became the blood moon. From ancient times to antiquity and the Middle Ages, he had a great appeal to humanity, impressing people for millennia. At the beginning of the 17th century, Galileo perfected the telescope and aimed it at the moon, which made a wealth of new discoveries possible. The moon landing in 1969 was one of the most important events in human history.

Even the night was always fear and fascination at the same time. Only the disappearance of the sun reveals the view of the universe. At the same time our vision is limited, clear outlines become shadows, colors turn gray. No wonder the night was always considered mystical and mysterious. For night scenes, the painters often needed dark shades that made other colors disappear. But the moon was a way to give light and depth to an image. In the art, there are many works about the moon and the night, some of which have contradictory themes. They are about peace and chaos, life and death, holiness and sin, romance and melancholy, security and threat, life and death. The artist Vincent van Gogh was fascinated by the night. His famous starry night was created in the open air.

Karl Friedrich Schinkel created a stage setting for Mozart's Magic Flute with the Palace of the Queen of the Night. And Albrecht Dürer painted the Mother of God on a crescent moon, surrounded by a halo. Since time immemorial, artists have been inspired by the moon and the night and created a variety of fantastic works.
