Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough counts among the most important English painters of the 18th century. Born on 14 May 1727 in Sudbury, Sussex, the son of a cloth merchant was a nonconformist in artistic terms, which was one reason why he made his breakthrough relatively late. He had a difficult relationship with the Royal Academy of Arts, because he rejected the traditional continental painting style preferred by them and opposed the sober, academically influenced painting style with his concept of sensitivity (empathy).

Thomas Gainsborough was of the opinion that the viewer of a painting must be able to grasp the motifs depicted even without previous knowledge. To achieve this, he used an unusual colour scheme, natural scenery and a contrast between the main motif and the background. Joshua Reynolds about the fact that the colour blue could also be used centrally in a painting.

Thomas Gainsborough died of cancer on 2 August 1788 in London.
