Rococo

Around 1730, the artistic style of the Rococo developed from the Baroque and spread from France throughout Europe. Consequently, the term "rococo" also comes from a French word, namely "rocaille", which refers to the squiggles of shells. The term, which was not coined until the second half of the 19th century, refers primarily to the patterns used in Rococo architecture and sculpture. However, this design principle also exerted a great influence on painting. Thus, Rococo paintings were characterized by their playfulness as well as by their vivid lines and colors. With regard to the chosen motifs, a turn to sensuality and eroticism could be seen.

One of the most important painters of the Rococo period was the Frenchman Antoine Watteau, who even created his own genre of paintings with the "fêtes galantes". The Italian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo began his artistic activity in the Baroque period, but his main work - the frescoes in the Würzburg Residenz - was created in the heyday of the Rococo. Also notable is the Spaniard Francisco de Goya, who increasingly interwove the distinctive features of the Rococo with motifs from Spanish folklore.

Rococo came to an end around 1780, when it was gradually replaced by Classicism.
