Nicolas Lancret (1690 - 1743) was next to his former classmate and friend Jean-Antoine Watteau one of the most significant painters of the French Rococo. Lancret admired Watteau so much that he left his first master Pierre d'Ulin in 1712, after about four years of apprenticeship, to switch to Watteau's teacher Claude Gillot . Gillot, one of the co-founders of the Rococo influenced significantly the later work of the young Lancret. Another important role was played by six-year-old Watteau. The two painters combined a very close friendship. However, this bond was broken when Lancret presented two of his works at the Exposition de la Jeunesse on Place Dauphine. The pictures were well received and should lay the foundation for his later fame. But since they looked confusingly like the Watteau style, many mistakenly congratulated him instead of Lancret.

Lancret also had to face the comparison to Watteau later. Because in many of his works, he dealt, as Watteau, with the typical Rococo genre of Fêtes Galantes. Festive scenes such as balls, village weddings or fairs were often the central themes. Lancret found much recognition in this genre and was accepted in 1718 at the French Academy. But during Watteau's lifetime, he never managed to outdo him in the so-called "Watteau genre". Only after his death in 1721 Lancret was able to rise together with Jean -Baptiste Pater to one of the leading champions. This is also evident in his appointment as Council Member of the Academy in 1735. Frederick the Great is said to have been a great admirer of Lancret's work.

Numerous pictures of Lancret are exhibited today in various museums around the world. The works from the last years of his work enjoy the highest popularity, such as "Winter" or "Mademoiselle Camargo at the Dance". Many describe one of his latest works as a masterpiece "The Family in the Garden Over Coffee" (1742). Lancret himself remained unbound for most of his life and only married in 1741, the 18-year-old granddaughter of the author Boursault. The marriage is said to have arisen allegedly less for love, but to help the young girl and her dying mother from their plight. Only about two years later Lancret died of pneumonia. © Meisterdrucke
