Giovanni Antonio Canal was a painter known for his numerous city and bridge paintings. Hardly anyone knew him under his real name. He chose the stage name Canaletto for himself. Early on, Canaletto began painting and devoted himself to landscape paintings. He had learned this art from his father, who among other things created stage sets for plays. The art was Giovanni Antonio Canal thus in the blood.
Canaletto's hometown was Venice, which is why he used the beauty of this city for some pictures and captured them in a painting. He was also famous for these numerous works of the Italian city. But not only simple paintings were painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal. He also devoted himself to the Capricci. This is a special form of painting. Here, the respective images are very detailed and designed. In order to be able to implement this form of painting, it required great precision. Giovanni Antonio Canal had a nephew,
Bernardo Bellotto . He worked in much the same way as his uncle, but with a trained eye, it was easy to see who made the painting. Canaletto used bright colors and shades, which made his pictures much brighter and friendlier. His nephew, however, put on gloomy paintings and dark colors.
Most of the time, Giovanni Antonio Canal stayed in Venice and Italy and presented his paintings there. But that should not be everything. The English consul Joseph Smith became aware of Canaletto. He had a great interest in art from all over the world and supported some artists of his time. He brought Canaletto and his works to England, to the capital London. Canal spent some years there and devoted himself to painting there. During this time, some famous works such as Windsor Castle were built. In England, Canaletto experienced much more ease than in his hometown. This was reflected in his works again. The resulting paintings looked a lot brighter and friendlier. The last time of his life spent Giovanni Antonio Canal back in Venice. But here he did not seem happy. The once bright and colorful pictures became bleak. The artist has expressed in his paintings what he has felt deep inside before his death.
