Francisco de Goya

1112 Discovered works of art  •  ID: #1694
Francisco de Goya was a Spanish painter of the 18th and 19th centuries. He completed an artistic apprenticeship and aimed at a career on the farm. De Goya, who was still unknown at the time, worked on achieving his dream until he was finally named, among other things, the painter of the king. A few years later, the artist suffered a severe stroke, which caused him to lose his hearing. However, this drastic event had no negative impact on his career and he was still the court's most sought-after portraitist. Francisco de Goya was later forced to emigrate to Bordeaux because he was under political persecution. The reason for this was his drawings of war, which contained very critical representations of the church and royal power and thus caused outrage.

In order to go into the style of the artist, one can see in his paintings that he used many different art styles, which means that it is not possible to precisely classify his style. However, he began his career mainly with paintings that can be assigned to Rococo. So these pictures were characterized by cheerfulness, elegance and playfulness. After his illness, his style changed enormously, so instead of the usual cheerful motifs suddenly dark, ghostly shapes and darker colors appeared in his paintings. This is explained, among other things, by the fact that the painter has a changed sensory perception due to the deafness and thus perceives his environment more critically. In the subsequent works, a wide variety of styles could still be recognized. In his portrait painting, de Goya completely breaks away from conventional representations and instead conveys a lightness and openness in them.

De Goya was a very progressive and modern artist in his day. This can also be seen in the topics that often focus on political or socially critical topics. At that time, art was still understood as a craft, which also means that the artists at that time worked on orders, which cannot be seen at de Goya. He paints many paintings of his own choice and to illustrate a personal attitude. An example of this is the well-known painting "The Execution of the Insurgents on May 3, 1808", in which it depicts the political unrest in a very critical manner. This painting also shows another characteristic of the artist. De Goya often provoked with his paintings, not only in a political sense, but also in a social context. In this context, the painting "The Naked Maya" not only provoked, but was also a revolutionary work. This painting was the first nude picture of Spanish art at the time and was seen by many as a break from tradition. Despite the criticism of the artist at the time, the criticized aspects are exactly what de Goya ultimately defines and makes him a revolutionary artist in his time. © Meisterdrucke
