The picture "Heligoland in the Moonlight" by Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern takes the viewer into a dangerous situation. Roaring waves wash around the rocky coast of Heligoland at night. Rugged, the rocky outcrops sting from the foaming waters, while suddenly the dense cloud cover in the sky tears open and let the rays of a bright moon shine through. But the cold light of the full moon does not make the rough seas calm. On the contrary, since its appearance like a spotlight hits the foaming spray, it only makes it all the more agitated and frightening. That also seems to precipitate two nocturnal strollers. While one still kneeling seems to be fascinated by the turbulent water, the other recognizes an indefinite danger. It looks as if he wants to pull back the fellow at the collar and thus keep him from jumping directly into the flood.

In the distance, we see the light of the lighthouse and suspect that it is not permanent, but in a regular rhythm, the scene lights again after it has dipped back into the dark. How might the light of the moon work when it is the sole source of light and the cone of light in the tower shines on the sea, instead of wandering for a few seconds over the land? Probably like the light in the village on the horizon, about which a pale storm of bad weather has spread, while the moon makes the watercourse to a creek of liquid silver.

The artist shows us the unpredictability of the high seas, which seems to lead a life of its own, especially at night, which fascinates, but also exudes danger, which becomes tangible through the depiction, especially because they are thought-provoking with the two persons frozen in the movement is associated.
