"Arnaut and dogs" by Jean Leon Gerome from 1879 is a realistic depiction of an Albanian painted together with two sleeping dogs. The painter's favorite subjects include Orientalism inspired by his numerous travels to Turkey and Egypt. This painting depicts an Albanian dressed in local clothes, shining in bright red. In addition, he wears a white wrapped cloth headgear and a vest in white and green. Wrapped around the hips is an eye-catching scarf that sits above the balloon-shaped pants. Long sheepskin boots complete the image of the Albanian carrying a large musket that he holds like a walking stick. This results in a dynamic and exciting posture. The Albanian looks as if he has just crossed the archway in the background. And discovered the two sleeping dogs, which can be seen in the front part of the painting.

The painting is decorated in warm shades that testify to the climatic conditions that dominate Albania and the Balkan Peninsula. The archway and the stone wall occupy much of the picture. In the wall is also a window, which is provided with bars. The Albanian guarded the archway, while the dogs seem to have overheated so much that they went to sleep. Gerome was famous for his realistic depiction of people who came from a different culture than his own. Clothes and weapons always corresponded to what was generally known and what his contemporaries had seen with their own eyes when traveling. The dogs give the scene something everyday and lovable and make the subject more easily accessible to the viewer. Thanks to the sloping arrangement of the Albanian and the two dogs, the eye wanders first to the guard, then to the two sleeping animals. This makes the viewer smile and he can more easily identify with the scene. © Meisterdrucke
