Almost photographically, the viewer feels the painting "The Wailing Wall" by the painter Jean Leon Gerome. Each brick is unique and shows individual traces of weathering and decay. A multitude of shades of sandstone yellow, cracks and grasses growing out of the cracks in the walls almost make us forget that this is a painting and not a photograph. The picture belongs to the style of academic realism. The painter Jean Leon Gerome painted as realistically as possible what he encountered on his numerous journeys. His most frequent subjects are historical, oriental and mythical themes.

In front of the wall stands a Jew who holds a note with prayers or wishes in his hands. According to tradition, he just wants to put the piece of paper in a wall of the Wailing Wall. Next to him is a staff, on the floor is a bundle that probably contains his belongings. On his head he wears a black top hat, dressed in a green robe. Does he want to go on a journey and ask for good luck or did he come back safely and want to thank God? The viewer learns nothing about this.

The Wailing Wall is the western part of the perimeter wall of the Herodian Temple, which originally had no religious significance. It was not until the 5th century AD that the Wailing Wall became a place of worship. It is not called a Wailing Wall by the Jews, but simply a wall or a western wall. Many Jews see it as a symbol of the eternal covenant of God with the Jewish people. The tradition of putting notes in the cracks with prayers or wishes dates back to the early 18th century and is documented here by the painter. © Meisterdrucke
