Style labels are tools of hindsight: most of the categories art history uses to sort its material today arose only in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often long after the works they describe. Terms such as Impressionism and Fauvism even began as critics' taunts and only later settled into neutral vocabulary. Painters who worked between the movements, changed manner more than once or followed regional traditions fall through this grid.

Then there is the record itself. For many painters of earlier centuries neither the dates of their lives nor their training can be established. With anonymous masters, scholarship helps itself with names of convenience such as the Master of the Housebook, coined after a principal work or the place where it is kept. Workshop practice blurs the boundaries too. An eighteenth-century portraitist followed the conventions of his patrons, not the programme of a school; such programmes were often only formulated by posterity.

This section is therefore laid out as an open collection: transitional figures between the schools, specialists away from the great centres, rediscoveries with fragmentary biographies. As soon as an attribution can be secured, the works move into the fitting category; until then they stand here, deliberately side by side.
