Mannerism

Maniera, manner, was a term of praise for Giorgio Vasari in the sixteenth century and meant the personal, virtuoso style of an artist. Only later art history made of it the period name for the art of the decades after the High Renaissance, which deliberately left classical balance behind. Figures were elongated and set in twisting poses, pictorial spaces tilted, colours driven towards the artificial. Elegance counted for more than probability.

The spectrum of this generation was unusually broad. Agnolo Bronzino gave the Florentine court portrait a smooth coolness shimmering like enamel, Giulio Romano, Raphael's most important pupil, carried the style into the fresco world of the Palazzo del Te in Mantua, and Giuseppe Arcimboldo assembled heads from fruits, flowers and books at the imperial court of the Habsburgs. El Greco took the elongated figure to Spain and heightened it to the ecstatic, while Hendrik Goltzius spread the virtuoso flourish across the whole of Europe as an engraver. With Sofonisba Anguissola, portraitist at the Spanish court of Philip II, a woman moreover stepped into the front rank of this generation. Around 1600 painting in Bologna and Rome returned to measure and closeness to nature. With that this interlude ended; its audacity had to wait for the twentieth century to be appreciated again.
