American Art

Three landscapes in a New York shop window made a young unknown famous in the autumn of 1825: Thomas Cole had travelled up the Hudson and painted the wilderness, untamed and at the same time closely observed, and among the first buyers was the engraver Asher Brown Durand. From this beginning grew the Hudson River School, the first independent school of painting in the United States.

The successors thought bigger. Frederic Edwin Church, Cole's pupil, exhibited his panorama The Heart of the Andes in 1859 and let visitors look at it through opera glasses for an entrance fee. Albert Bierstadt did the same with monumental views of the Rocky Mountains. In parallel a documentary America took shape. George Catlin travelled the prairies in the 1830s and portrayed members of dozens of indigenous nations, John James Audubon published his life-size ornithological work The Birds of America between 1827 and 1838.

At the same time the gaze widened outward and inward. James Abbott McNeill Whistler had left America for Europe as early as 1855 and in 1871 painted in London the austere portrait of his mother that hangs today in Paris. William Merritt Chase trained a whole generation of painters in New York. And in 1930 Grant Wood gave the rural Midwest, with American Gothic, a picture in which the country recognises itself and chafes at itself to this day.
