Already during his lifetime, Charles Bird King was widely regarded in the United States of America as a recognized and admired portrait artist. He was born on September 26, 1785 in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1862 he died in Washington DC on 18 March. He went through a classical painting education, which led him to the age of 15 in New York to Edward Savage . There he learned at a young age, the then very respected crafts of portrait painting, which was to fill in the following years determined his artistic cosmos. Another period of his apprenticeship was the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he studied for seven years with none other than Benjamin West .

In 1812 he returned to his homeland, the United States, and finally settled in Washington DC. Like many of his contemporary fellow artists, Charles Bird King also realized that painting is only suitable as a livelihood if the order books are right. Portraits were in demand at the time in the US capital. King knew how to make contacts with dignitaries and politicians in the United States capital, so that he had a good living as a commissioned portrait artist. His works in particular impress with a concrete brushwork. However, this lends the portraits, in combination with the at that time quite unusual color intensity, a virality which makes each portrait appear as a small masterpiece. Particularly noteworthy is King's image of important and casual representatives of the indigenous population of America; a commissioned piece of work by Thomas McKenney, who wanted to preserve the heritage of the indigenous peoples, and which includes more than 140 works. It is indeed regrettable that Charles Bird King had devoted himself so much to portraying. His few pictures, attributed primarily to genre painting or classified as still lifes, suggest that a great representative of his art was at work here. They are unmistakably influenced by the Flemish and Dutch masters of bygone eras, whose art he must have come into contact with during his time in Europe. Their attention to detail is even enhanced by King's unusual color scheme, making the pieces look very modern, like an anachronism to this day. © Meisterdrucke
