Still life as an independent art genre refers to a decorated or random arrangement of non-moving objects such as As fruits, flowers, fish, everyday objects, hunting utensils and much more. Typically, still lifes are thematically and aesthetically composed.

Although there was still life at all times of artistic epochs, the art form established itself as an independent genus only in the 17th century. Presenting natural objects and everyday objects in their original beauty was the origin of this art form, but still life became an ambassador of encrypted and often morally colored statements in the composition and presentation of objects.
In later epochs, the decorative character of still life dominated and with the increasing demand for decorative art and the commercialization of the arts and crafts, still life became a popular and widespread decorative object in the town houses.

The opulent design of so-called splendor still life at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century marks the culmination of this art form and also the final phase of the baroque still life. At that time, due to the high esteem of this art form, some artists could rise to become high paid court painters, who received a high recognition of their art. However, even less favored artists have been able to build an often flourishing arts and crafts due to the popularity of this form of presentation, markets, dealers, bookstores, and their studio.

After a lull in the enthusiasm for still life during the 18th century, still life came to new heights in the 19th and 20th centuries and was taken up again by well-known artists of their time such as Paul Cézanne, Georges Braque and Max Beckmann. It thus established itself as a constant art genre in the art Olympus across various epochs and artistic styles, and is constantly finding new forms of representation in ever new artistic currents.
