Renaissance

The term Renaissance refers to a cultural epoch of the 15th and 16th centuries that originated in Italy and from there later spread to other countries in Europe. The word Renaissance is derived from the Italian expression "la rinascita", rebirth. In addition to painting and architecture, it also includes sculpture and literature of the period from 1420 to 1525. The Renaissance is divided into the Early Renaissance, also known as the Quattrocento, the High Renaissance, followed by Mannerism, which passed into the Baroque era.

Much religious art was created in the painting of this period. Artists wanted to depict physical perfection and pursued close anatomical studies. Sculptors created lifelike sculpts, most of which were depicted nude. Michelangelo's David, carved from a huge block of marble, is probably the most famous example of this. Michelangelo lived from 1475 to 1564 and was the most famous architect of his time.

In architecture, Roman antiquity was revived. The Renaissance style followed the Gothic style. Symmetry, geometry was important, there were set rules in building. Columns, domes, arches and niches were important design elements.

Leonardo da Vinci, another famous artist of the time, lived from 1452 to 1481 He painted, drew, modeled, designed machines, etc. His most famous work is the Mona Lisa exhibited in the Louvre.
