Waterhouse’s ‘Vanity’ thrives on a quiet, almost private moment. The figure is completely absorbed in herself, her gaze fixed on beauty, jewellery or a reflection, and yet the scene does not simply come across as vain. With Waterhouse, there is always a second mood beneath the surface: something pensive, slightly dreamy, and at times even melancholic. As a painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, he combined clear figure drawing with a soft, sensual visual language. Fabrics, skin tones and gestures tell just as much of the story here as the title itself.
The reproduction measures 38 × 50 cm and is printed on Canvas Leonardo (Satin). The satin finish brings out the subtle transitions, the warm colour tones and the tranquil play of light in a balanced way. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
