"Le déjeuner des canotiers" is a group picture of the friends of the artist Pierre Auguste Renoir. The rowers can be clearly recognized by their clothing: a white shirt and a simple straw hat are typical of this work. Also interesting are the other persons of the picture. You can see that the rower's breakfast is made up of people from all walks of life. Among those depicted are an art critic and journalists, two actresses, an art collector, several artists, a poet, the son of the restaurant owner, and Pierre's future wife. Whether this breakfast really took place is possible, but unlikely. At the time, such an informal get-together was rather rare, as it involves people of very different social classes. Pierre wants to show that there can be a unity despite differences here. He probably also consciously chose the morning as a symbol for a new beginning. © Meisterdrucke |
