Photography

A daguerreotype was a mirror-like unique image on a silvered copper plate. Wet collodion plates, and from about 1880 the handier dry plates, made the camera mobile, and the roll-film camera of 1888 finally brought photography into amateur hands. Hardly any other pictorial medium has transformed itself so quickly or conquered science, reportage and everyday life at such speed.

The early masters drew very different conclusions from it. In California in 1878 Eadweard Muybridge broke a horse's gallop down into sequential exposures. For the first time there was proof that at moments all four hooves are in the air. From 1908 Lewis Hine photographed children in American factories and mines. His pictures supplied arguments for the legal curbing of child labour. Herbert Ponting accompanied Scott's Antarctic expedition of 1910 to 1912 with the camera.

Early on, the medium also developed an artistic claim of its own. Karl Blossfeldt photographed parts of plants in austere magnification. His volume Art Forms in Nature of 1928 became a key work of the sober, exacting photography of the 1920s. In the Mexico of the 1920s Tina Modotti joined formal clarity to political commitment. Beside them stand countless studios and travelling photographers whose names cannot be traced, their pictures now forming the visual memory of their age.
