A well-known Dutch proverb for a messy household reads: "It looks like a household by Jan Steen". And indeed, the paintings of the Dutch artist are a bit chaotic and full of joie de vivre. These are scenes of everyday life and the bourgeoisie that Jan Havickszoon Steen brought to the screen in the 17th century. At first glance, what at first glance looks like a humorous scene to the observer reveals criticism of the seemingly carefree way of life. Steen had no classical artist education. The lack of perspective knowledge he compensates by the abundance of figures in his paintings. The fine fabric representations provide space. "The dancing couple" shows a celebrating company with flirtation and wine. Music is playing and children are busy with their toys in this gathering. But the symbols of cut flowers, soap bubbles and egg shells show the transience of pleasure. In the painting, on the left side, there is a young man with a smirking expression and the enjoyment of a glass of wine. This figure represents Jan Havickszoon Steen. © Meisterdrucke
