Spherical harmonics are encountered when calculating the quantum mechanical wave function for the hydrogen atom. These functions are the building blocks of the club-shaped orbitals known from chemistry.
Just as every periodic function can be constructed from sine and cosine waves of different frequencies, every function on a sphere can be constructed from a basis of spherical functions.
Here I have tried to use only one of these basis functions. Each longitude and latitude is assigned a value, e.g. the distance from the origin for this combination of angles.
I visualise surfaces using fine contour lines: I draw lines on all these lobes, keeping either the length or the width constant. This is a network of lines in three-dimensional space, a virtual sculpture.
I create code based on the three.js framework to bring this to life (no AI). I scale the entire sculpture and nest several of them, colouring the contour lines differently on each of the meshes. Then I rotate it and pan my virtual camera to find an interesting angle.
