Under a green canopy, the guests of the restaurant Jacob sit quietly at their tables. Have you already eaten, or are you still waiting for food, coffee and cake or a menu? In any case, the image of Max Liebermann radiates a contented serenity. What a beautiful moment, irretrievable and yet held by the artist for posterity. The painting from 1902 shows a scene in Hamburg, the terrace of the restaurant opens the view of the Elbe. The painter refrains from giving the faces of his characters individual traits, and yet they all seem to enjoy the special happiness of this beautiful day. The colors are rather muted, but despite the sunspots on the ground created by the canopy, a slight haze seems to be in the air. Nothing exciting happens here - and this is precisely the kind of happiness Liebermann expresses with his picture.
