Rococo  ·  Female Nude

The French rococo painter Francois Boucher created the painting Leda and the Swan in 1742. The naked Leda and her companion are surprised by a swan - the transformed Zeus. Leda raises her arm and at the same time covers the other young girl, resulting in a delightful triangular composition of the two women and the swan. Bright light falls on Leda, the main character, making her look as delicate and fragile as porcelain. The jewelry in her hair marks her as the king's daughter, into whom Zeus, the father of the gods, has fallen madly in love. Now he seduces her as Swan transforms. This first intimate encounter, from which later six children, among other things the beautiful Helena will spring, is implemented here in the best manner of Francois Boucher painterly. He skilfully combines the boundaries between history painting and genre painting.
