Victorian Art

In the decades of Queen Victoria's reign, 1837 to 1901, the prosperity of industrial England created a picture public of a new type: manufacturers and merchants bought contemporary art, engravings carried the successes of the season into every household, and a painting ideally had a story to tell, with a moral, a literary source or both. The Royal Academy became the stage, its annual exhibition a society event.

The span of these decades is great. Frederic Leighton, President of the Royal Academy from 1878, painted antique ideal worlds such as the sleeping Flaming June of 1895. From 1871 the Frenchman James Tissot depicted fashionable society on deck and in the salon from his London base. John Atkinson Grimshaw found his theme in moonlight over wet docks and suburban streets, Edward Burne-Jones dreamed himself into chivalric bygone ages. Frank Dicksee and Herbert James Draper kept history and myth alive in the grand format; Draper's Lament for Icarus of 1898 mourns the fallen one with wings still outspread.

To this comes a very British speciality, fairy painting: Richard Dadd, who created his principal work in an asylum, and John Anster Fitzgerald filled small formats with meticulously painted fairy folk. Gravity and curiosity in this art often lie only a frame apart.
