Edward Burne-Jones spent his childhood in industrial Birmingham and began his artistic career while still at school. He decided to study theology. Here he met the later designer William Morris, both became friends and broke off their studies together. They dedicated themselves to art and worked together as partners. Burne-Jones found his spiritual home in the circle of the Pre-Raphaelites and became one of the most important representatives of the artists' union.
But Edward Burne-Jones wanted more than just the reproduction of a motif; he wanted art to enter life and the home. He was not only an artist, but also a craftsman, and with this approach he is considered the founder of the arts and crafts. In contrast to the grey environment of industry, he created a world of fairy tales, sagas and legends. Following literary models, he created stained glass windows, ceramic tiles, furniture and tapestries. Together with his companion Morris, he is considered the founder of modern design.
His interpretation Sleeping Beauty of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, as well as the depictions of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are faithfully reproduced in detail.
