Painting Frames "Maria" |
| • Serie: Kopar • Width: 26mm • Height: 24mm |
| This frame is well worth a closer look. At 26 mm wide and 24 mm high, it remains slim, yet features a surprisingly rich design: the cut edge reveals solid wood – open-grained and light in colour – from which the profile has been neatly carved. The design features an inverted grooved profile that rises from the wall and then slopes down towards the rebate. This inward-sloping movement literally draws the eye into the picture – which is precisely why such profiles have been used in southern Germany and northern Italy since the Baroque period. A pressed leaf-and-stem motif sits on the outer bead, beneath which runs a finer band of tendrils. The inner edge is gilded and finishes the whole with a warm, narrow line of light. We find the colour scheme particularly beautiful: a cream-white frame, patinated, with coloured speckles in the recesses. In oblique light, the ornaments stand out in relief; viewed head-on, the surface appears almost calm. We recommend it for floral still lifes, delicate watercolours or landscape etchings. It looks its best when the picture itself is not too vibrantly coloured – then both can come into their own. |
